Sibford

The name Sibford may “mean” sheep-ford, there being a ford between Burdrop and Sibford Ferris.

Into the 20th century, Sibford Gower and Burdrop together were known as Broad Sibford, while Sibford Ferris was known as Little Sibford.

Various spellings of the name have been found:

Scipforde, Sibeford found in the Domesday Book of 1086 (not noted for its consistent spelling)

Sibba’s Ford found in a document from 1153

Zibberd sometimes found on old maps

Sibbard in the Journal of George Fox, 1694
