Domesday 2010
William the Conqueror commissioned a survey and census to record life in England in 1086. Originally called “the King’s book”, it came to be known as the Domesday Book. Life in the villages mentioned in that survey has continued over the centuries and in Sibford we are fortunate to have some accounts written in the late 1800s and early 1900s by former Sibfordians which provide an insight into the everyday life and work in the village at that time.
In 2009 the Sibfords Society decided to invite present day villagers to help them make a record of life in this rural North Oxfordshire Village during 2010. The aim of the survey was to leave a record of village life at the beginning of the 21st century for future generations.
Through this website we are publishing the results of the 2010 survey and comparing it with material from the Sibfords Society archives, to highlight trends and changes through the years.
As a contribution to the project, Maureen Hicks, past-Chair of the Sibfords Society, wrote a monthly diary during 2010.
