Revd Neil writes: Everyone, wherever you might live, is invited to come and be together at this year’s Charity Lent lunches. Why not take this opportunity to visit the different villages in our Benefice? See the poster attached below for dates.
Please do invite friends, neighbours and family along, to share with you in this season of Lent, a home cooked bowl of soup, raising money for local, national and international charities.

Oxfordshire County Council writes:
Free service supports thousands of residents in Oxfordshire with their home energy.
Residents in Oxfordshire can benefit from the advice and support of Better Housing Better Health, a service that helps those worrying about their home energy to create warmer, healthier and happier homes. Last year, through the service’s free helpline and their free home visit service (BHBH+) – their team of trained advisors helped over 2500 residents with the aim this year to help even more.
The service can help:
Residents who are finding it hard to understand energy bills, pay for fuel or read meters
Access funding to replace old and broken heating systems
Access funding for insulation measures
Reduce damp, condensation and mould by better ways of managing a home
Understand and programme heating controls
Making onward referrals to additional support services, such as Benefits advice and debt support
Some residents may be eligible for additional heating support depending on their situation.
To speak to the friendly team, call 0800 107 0044 or visit www.bhbh.org.uk and complete the online referral form or find our e-mail address.
Case Studies
David, from Cherwell, contacted BHBH who offered him a free home energy visit and helped him apply for funding via a grant scheme to insulate his loft and walls. David was fully eligible for loft and cavity wall insulation. David’s friend, Andy gave the following feedback: “We just wanted to express our gratitude to you and your team at the National Energy Foundation (NEF) for the work that you have done to enable the completion of the Loft Insulation and the Cavity Wall Insulation at David’s home. Our gratitude goes right back to the initial meeting with Beata, who represented NEF. I have to say that Beata was particularly knowledgeable, very professional and very efficient, as well as being very easy to deal with”.
Ms W, from West Oxfordshire, contacted BHBH for help with her broken boiler which she couldn’t afford to replace. Ms W suffers from various health conditions including cancer so it was important she stayed warm at home. BHBH helped her apply for a council grant and she was awarded almost £4,000 for a fully funded replacement. “I am writing to thank you so much for organising my new boiler which has now been fitted. I can’t thank you enough. I am so grateful to you.”

Sibford Gower and Sibford Ferris Parish Councils jointly purchased a speed detection device in August 2021 in order to run a Community Speedwatch Scheme in response to concerns raised by parishioners about speeding within the Sibfords. Taking part in the scheme would provide us with data that can help identify the level of speeding issues in the village informing future plans for speed reduction whilst also educating and encouraging drivers to drive sensibly. Unfortunately the minimum number of volunteers required to run the scheme was not achieved so the scheme could not go ahead. The Parish Councils have agreed to make one more attempt to get a group together to run the scheme with the hope of having volunteers trained and ready to start the scheme when we get some warmer weather.
If you would be interested in volunteering to take part in the Community Speedwatch Scheme in the Sibfords please advise the Parish Clerk by e-mailing sfpc@thesibfords.org.uk or Sibford.gower.pc@thesibfords.org.uk or telephone 07419 126 206.

Revd Neil Bowler writes: In the light of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria I have been asked by several people in our villages how they might personally support the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal. Below is the link to their website for those who might want to help by way of donation.
Below also is a prayer from the charity Tearfund that you might like to use in the coming days and weeks ahead for all those affected by the earthquake.
Loving God, God of the Earth, of the mountains and the seas, We lift before you the people of Turkey and Syria, We pray for help for people who are trapped under rubble. We pray for shelter for those who have lost their homes. We pray for comfort for people who are grieving. We pray for peace for all who are scared and alone. We pray for the earth to be calm and for the aftershocks to subside. We pray for those who have already lost so much and now have another disaster to face. Give them strength and courage. Be their fortress, their rock and their refuge. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Julie Lynn-Evans and Sue Bannister write: We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our fundraising event at the village hall on November 30 in aid of the Mulberry Bush School at Standlake which raised £11,735 for the school after doubling by The Big Give to whom we also made a donation. Primarily we would like to thank Martin Fiennes who spoke wonderfully about Broughton Castle, its history and what it means to him and his family. We are also most grateful to all those who attended the talk, made delicious canapés, gave generous donations, sponsored wine and helped us that evening. Martin and his brother William donated copies of The Music Room which sold very well. It was a great community effort. In a message, the fund raising team of the residential school which cares for severely traumatised young children expressed their thanks to everyone involved:
“I wanted to thank you all for all your efforts and a truly magnificent result, which really helped us towards our target as part of this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge (we raised an amazing £35k+ in a week, which goes towards our school house refurbishment fund).”
