For those of you with the traditional landline (copper) and/or those in need of BT’s Telecare Service, you may well have received a letter from BT advising you of the proposed change, and that one of their engineers will be in touch to confirm a date and time for the work to be carried out.
This week, a resident in the Ferris was contacted by a man claiming to be such an engineer. As our resident had previously received a letter from BT (as above), she was initially happy to engage with the caller. However, the caller then suggested that her existing telephone would not work once the transfer had taken place, and it would cost her £150 for a new phone. He then suggested that he could sell her two phones at about £15 each but would need details of her bank card to process the sale.
It was clear this was a scam and our resident did all the right things. Helped by her friends and neighbours, a happy ending ensued.
I’ve been in touch with BT today and they have advised that if you are at all concerned about being contacted by a BT engineer to arrange an appointment, ask for their name and contact telephone number and then dial 150(BT), choosing option number 2. They will then be able to confirm whether or not the person is legitimate.
This is a particularly nasty scam. Do not give them any bank or card details.
