Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

1893, May 1, Monday 

Children came and they brought round their May-garlands. The inhabitants gave them about £2. 2. 0. so I hear. I superintended School of Art examination at the Friends’ School. Messrs Long, Poulton and Leake were there as members of Committee. Mr Woolgrove came in for 5 minutes. The subjects were 7 – 8, Model drawings, 8.30 – 10 Freehand.

1893, May 5, Friday

Visited Thomas Hillman’s wife who was burnt a good deal at the Heath allotments a week or ten days ago. She is getting on very well. Neighbours have given her clothing. I gave her 10/- out of Charity Estate. Also visited Mrs. Alcock.

1893, May 6, Saturday

The School-children’s May treat was given this afternoon. Mr Oddie sent up some pots of flowers for decoration and came up himself. There were 107 children present at the tea. After tea they played in my “Slinket”.

1893, May 7, Sunday

I conducted examination in perspective, Department Science and Art at Friends’ School.

1893, May 21, Sunday

Fine. Holy communion at 8am. 11 communicants. Frank walked to Swalcliffe to read Lessons at Evening Service.
