Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

1886, March 20, Saturday

The press cutting pasted into the inside front cover of this new volume of the diaries is a duplicate of that included on 21 December 1885.

Mr George Hunt came as deputation for British & Foreign Bible Society to a meeting in the School-room. He brought a magic lantern with him. The meeting was small as might have been expected. He came from Banbury. Mr Garrard met him here. They remained to supper and then went on to Brailes.

Visited the Misses Dix.

1886, March 21, Sunday

Children’s service at 3 pm. Evening service at 7. Rev E. J. Smith, Rector of Tadmarton preached to a very good congregation.

1886, March 22, Monday

Visited School, also Mr George Dix and Joseph Payne. The latter has been laid up with bronchitis and congestion of the lungs, but is now better, though not able to resume work.

Received a letter from the Warden of New College in reply to mine of a few days ago saying that several ex-fellows had applied for the Living of Witchingham and that he thought there would not be much hope for me.
