My manuscript of “The Teaching of the Prayer Book” etc was returned from the Clarendon Press, Oxford, this morning without letter or remark of any sort.

Received note from  Mr Smith of Brailes this morning inviting me to a Church Defence meeting in his Girls’ School this evening and to tea at 5.30. I asked Mr Davies to accompany me which he did. It was a very thick and foggy afternoon so we drove, and Webb brought back the horse and carriage and we walked home. It was so intensely dark that had it not been for the lantern which I had taken the precaution to supply myself with before starting from home we should have been quite unable to find our way.

Mr J J Dunne, son of the Vicar of Leake, Lincolnshire was the Lecturer for the Church Defence Association and he gave a very good lecture. Mr and Mrs Bradley were present. Mr Davies, at my suggestion, proposed a vote of thanks to the Lecturer which I seconded. There was a very good and orderly meeting.

Much of my pleasure was marred by an attack of diarrhoea.
