Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

1887, June 19, Sunday

The Jubilee: In all parts of the county bonfires were lighted at 10 pm on a rocket signal from the Malvern Hills. This was answered with rockets from hill to hill through the length and breadth of the land. We saw ten or twelve bonfires and numerous rockets etc., at 11 o’clock from the Great Elm whither I took Frank after the supper at Sibford Ferris.

1887, June 21, Tuesday

Jubilee Festival here in beautiful weather. Bonfires on the hills. From Shenlow Hill the signals from the Malvern Hills and the rockets from the Wrekin as well as 63 bonfires were seen.

1887, June 26, Sunday

The Salvation Army held a meeting on the green at Burdrop this evening, having come over from their “Barracks” at Hook Norton. I had a smaller congregation than usual in consequence.
