Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

1884, August 19, Tuesday

Visited

Mrs Horsman.

Joseph Dale’s child who has almost recovered from the effects of her recent accident.

Mrs Shelswell. Mrs Watkins was there. Oscar and Harry Shelswell were there but I did not see them. They called at the Vicarage in the evening.

1884, August 20, Wednesday

Horsman called and I paid him for repairs at the Heath Farm. The Doctor orders his wife three ounces of port wine per day: and they look to me to supply it out of the charity funds.

3 ounces is about 85cc; the weekly alcohol intake, assuming a port wine of 20% alcohol, would amount to about 12 modern “units”, close to the recommended limit of 14 units
