Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

1881, December 9, Friday

Harry returned to Oxford for his “Viva Voce” which is to come on tomorrow. Vere driving him with Bell and Rosa to Banbury.

Mr and Mrs Woolgrove and Mr and Mrs Turner my Churchwardens and their wives came by invitation to supper with the view of settling up the Church Accounts to Easter last. But Mr Woolgrove had not brought them with him – he had not finished his collection as he had been very busy over Mr Hithcox’s affairs.

1881, December 10, Saturday

Visited Widow W Keen and the Heath Allotments. Sam Woolgrove called and said that Thomas Coleman would be glad to have the allotment late in occupation of John Hathaway at Sibford Ferris.

Daisy Thame was elected to Royal St Ann’s Asylum yesterday.

Daisy Thame may have been niece to the Misses Dix. See 1878-11-24, 1879-02-25, 1881-11-12.

1881, December 11, Sunday

Stevens has mistakenly written “Nov” instead of “Dec” on these two pages.

Frost, the ground was covered with rime, almost as though there had been a slight fall of snow. The trees and hedges presented a much more beautiful appearance than they ever do after a snowstorm as the frost clings to the underside as well as the upper of every twig.

Visited Tay.

Taught in Sunday School morning and afternoon.

Baptized Thomas Fox’s child “Frederick George” and Admitted Charles Legge’s child “Alfred”.

Attended Choir practice this evening. Miss M. Dix complained to me of the rude conduct of William Webb and other boys who attended the Choir practice this evening. It appears that she lets them into the room before she has got the lamps alight and they “kick up a rumpus.” I told her she should keep the door locked till she was ready for them. But I said I would see what could be done.
