1877, September 27, Thursday 

Martha Spicer who is a niece of Thomas Wilks and has been in service with Mrs Baker of Brailes 8 years but has recently left, is residing at Wilks’s for the present. Mrs Smith of Brailes said she would suit us very well as Cook, but on sending for and speaking to her this morning I find she is about to be married.

Visited Mr Webb (better).

Sent Mr Kinch, Solicitor of Deddington, Certificate of burial of Mrs Sarah Gibbs in January last.

Wrote to Rebecca Hussey’s Book Charity and S.P.C.K. about books for Library.

1877, September 29, Saturday

St Michael and All Angels. Divine Service at 10 am.

Visited Poulton senior who is confined to house but not from work with a bad leg.

Repaid James Sabin children their Clothing Club money 6/2 as they are leaving Sibford.

Drove to Long Compton this afternoon to call on the Vicar, Mr Roberts and ask him to preach Harvest Thanksgiving service next Sunday afternoon, but he was not at home. Bell and Rosa accompanied me.

1877, September 30, Sunday

Visited Widow Keene who is much better than she was, but is unable to get about much. Gave her 1/- to get something to relieve pain she suffers in her stomach.

Visited Sally Green. Gave her 2/- to pay her expenses in going to see her daughter tomorrow.

Visited Mrs Shelswell whose son William is at home having left school (Infant Orphan Asylum, Wanstead) “for good”.

Saw Ada Grimbly, also Mrs Dix who has taken up her abode with Mrs Shelswell, her sister in law.

Visited Fox who married William Webb’s daughter recently, but no one at home.

Visited Mrs Lively and asked about her son a carpenter in London who is ill. She says he is at Guy’s Hospital having undergone an operation on the kneecap, and is going on well.

Visited Mrs James Rimell, to enquire after her daughter Gertrude who is now at school at King’s Linn and is very happy and well.

Banns of Marriage published between Thomas Green, Bachelor, and Esther Holtom, Spinster. Both of this parish.

Commenced this afternoon to chant the Psalms in church as a regular thing the last Sunday in the month.
