Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

Johns wrote me a full apology and promised amendment. I therefore wrote to his father and recalled my letter of last night.

Finished duty at New College this morning. Johns went to St Johns to arrange about day for matriculation examination. Paid Hughes for examining Thomas Braddell £1.10.

Hughes came this evening.

Walked to Wood Eaton and Water Eaton with Rev Carteret Fletcher, Rector of Carterton. Lent him some books on English Literature and gave him copies of U.K.S. for his children.

Drove Bell to Kidlington. Mr Martin came in with Braddell and asked that he might go to his rooms to tea.

Rev C J Fletcher called and returned books which I had lent him and asked me to preach at Carfax next Sunday night for the Indian Famine relief fund.

Boat races commenced. I took Bell and Rosa down.

Walked to Sandford and back. Mr Lee not there. Hill preached for me.

Took duty at New College for Leonard.

Received a p.o.o. for one guinea from Miss Brown Smith, 16 Spring Hill, Birmingham asking me to set four examination papers for her pupils in each of 5 subjects. I returned the P.O.O. declining to do what she asked. Hughes called.

Preached at Carfax this evening “as a friend” for Fletcher, on behalf of the Indian Famine Relief fund. Called on Mr Hughes afterwards.

Received a third letter from Miss Smith Brown, 16 Spring Hill, Birmingham asking for explanation of return of p.o.o. I replied.

Paid for Dinner Service to M. L. Brown, 47 St Martin’s Lane W6 £6.13.6.

Took duty at New College this afternoon for Macray. Johns went to Matriculation Exam at St John’s College and passed. Drove to Sandford. R. F. Heath accompanied me.

Grand evening party this evening at Rev Carteret J Fletcher’s. Bell and I went, but the place was so intolerably crowded that we stayed only a very short time.

Sent my notice of resignation of Curacy of Sandford to Rev L J Lee.

Johns went home till Monday.

Wrote to Hole to meet me in town on Monday.

“High prayers” at New, being Whit Sunday. Mr Lee sang. Preached and read prayers at Sandford this afternoon.

Macray took my duty at New this evening. I went to London and North Cheam. Hole met me at Paddington. We went to Mountain’s and dined there before going on to Cheam. Called on Mr Morse, Vicar of St John’s East Dulwich. He was not at home.

Leonard took my duty at New this morning, Macray in evening. Went to Wallington (drove) with Mr and Mrs Hole. I and Macray are now clear as regards duty at New.

Called on Thomas Brown at his office: saw his and my old friend Jago there. Visited Royal Academy. Returned to Oxford. Received from Miss Brown, 16 Spring Hill, Birmingham for exam papers £1.1. Leonard took my duty morning and evening. Thus I owe him two services.

Drove Rosa to Sandford. Johns matriculation at St John’s.
