1873, December 25, Thursday

Mr Reader wrote and asked me to meet Mr William Longman in town next Tuesday or Wednesday to confer about “The Librarian”.

No sermon at Sandford this afternoon. “High Prayers” at New College this evening.

1873, December 26, Friday

Drove Wingate to Horspath this afternoon.

Rev F A Wilson and family spent the evening here.

College Chapel closed.

1874, January 2, Friday

Rev Samuel Kettlewell, Hemel Hempstead, called about pupils in my absence.

Drove Mr Hole to Abingdon this afternoon. Rev F A Wilson and Mr Glencross came this evening.

1874, January 4, Sunday

Drove to Horspath after service at Sandford this afternoon and home to dinner. Cull and Hewitt called.

1874, January 5, Monday

Went to Mr Hole’s at North Cheam. Bell is at Cheltenham. I left Rosa in charge of house.

Called on Mr W Longman about the proposed magazine “The Librarian”. Mr Longman gave me a note to Mr Sampson Low on the matter. He publishes the “Publishers’ Circular”. Both seemed to have an idea that my scheme was a plagiarism of that work, but is not by any means.

Called on Mountain.

1874, January 12, Monday

Went to town in morning with Mountain. We called on our cousin W. Green, but he was not at home.

Drove out to Dulwich College in afternoon with Louie, Lottie and Mrs Shrapnell senior. Attended parochial “Penny Readings” at night. Mr Morse, Vicar of St John’s, came to supper.

1874, January 13, Tuesday

Left Mountain’s to stay a day or two with Thomas Brown’s, at Brixton (Burton Road). Mr Slaff came to dinner this evening. Mr and Mrs Estall called with one of their daughters.

1874, January 14, Wednesday

J Brown and I went to Bushey to see his children who are staying with their grandparents, Mr and Mrs Hill at Caldecot Farm.

1874, January 15, Thursday 

Went to Leytonstone. Called on Misses Norris and Medlicott who have a ladies’ school there.

de Trafford returned to Oxford this evening.

1874, January 22, Thursday

Evening party at my house. Present two Misses Hooper, two Misses Mardon, Mr and Mrs Wingate, Miss Harbage, Mr de Trafford. Mr and Mrs Wingate remained for the night.
