Diary of Rev Edward Stevens

Chamberlain went home to Catton, Norwich.

Preached “club sermon” at Sandford and took all the duty. Rev R. W. M. Pope accompanied me. I did not stay to the club dinner, though I was invited, as the invitation was unexpected. William Hutton came as pupil.

Went to Sandford, school inspection by H.M.I. There was a concert in the schoolroom in the evening. I stayed, and drove home with Mr Lee.

Bell went to Cheltenham.

Bell returned from Cheltenham.

My holiday as regards Sandford commenced today. Took duty for Archdeacon Pott at Abingdon to which I drove. Preached at St Michael’s in the morning and at St Nicholas in the afternoon.

Mr Tankerville Chamberlain, late of Magdalene College, called this morning during my absence. He has made the acquaintance of Harry and my pupil, Chamberlain, but as he bears an indifferent character, I have warned both of them to have nothing to do with him.

Took tea at Rev F Wilson’s.

Drove to West Hanney in morning and East Hanney in afternoon and took full duty for Mr McDougall.

Called on the Misses Mardon; ?Elforden?

Went to Weymouth, taking Rosa, Harry and William Hutton. Put up at the “Burden” Hotel.

Left “Burden” Hotel for 14 St Thomas Street private lodgings. Did not do any “duty.”

At Weymouth. Did not perform any “duty”.

I have been reading Victor Hugo’s “L’homme qui rit”, the early scenes of which are laid here.

Met Mr and Mrs Munday and Mr and Mrs Cavell, of London.

Returned from Weymouth.

Rev F A Wilson and Mrs Wilson came this evening.

Cab to Horton in morning and Beckley in afternoon; took full service at each for Mr Cooke, of Magdalene College, the Rector.

Bell went to Cheltenham. Mr Wingate called.

Received £100 from Longmans on account of G.L.B.

Took duty at Merton Chapel this morning for Rev Mr Treacher.

Issued by post a number of circular letters offering to take pupils for matriculation, Responsions, etc.

Drove to Sandford. Took Rosa.

Drove to Sandford. Charles Gibson accompanied me.

Bell returned from Cheltenham.

Resumed work at Sandford. Mr Lee invited me to dine at New College this evening which I did.

Received copies of U.K.S.ii.iii Boys’ and Girls'(?) from Longmans.

Drove to Sandford.

Sermon for C.M.S. at Sandford. Rev N. Macdonald, a missionary, preached. Collections morning 19/9½, afternoon 2/2½. Mr Lee is away for his holiday.

Mr Chamberlain came, accompanied by his son. I dined with them at Clarendon Hotel.

Received cheque from Longmans for £6, money advanced to Rev W. E. Coghlan for lessons in U.K.S.

Drove to Sandford. Rev Mr Hill, Chaplain of Littlemore Asylum, called.

Mr Thomas Brown came on a short visit this evening.

Mr Brown left at 5.8 pm.

Took duty at Littlemore Asylum this morning in exchange with Mr Hill. Lunched with Mr Sankey, the Superintendent.

Drove to Sandford. The toll collector at St Clement’s demanded 2d. on my returning as I had Mr Herbert Jackson with me.
