1872, January 3, Wednesday

Went to Ipswich to marry my cousin Emma Howe to Lieutenant J. Hales Dutton, R.N. Arrived at 2.20pm. Called on Mr Abbott, Mrs Wells, Rev A. Synge (Rector of St Peter’s) and Mrs Cooper. The two latter were not at home.

1872, January 4, Thursday

Married Emma Louise Howe to Lieutenant Dutton, at St Peter’s Church. Rev Alexander H. Synge. the Rector, assisted.

1872, January 5, Friday

Called on Aunt Cooper with Aunt Emma. Uncle J. P. Howe and I took supper at C. Wood’s who married my cousin Kate Cooper.

1872, January 21, Sunday

Cab to Sandford. Mr Lee and I lunched with Mr John Martin, one of the churchwardens. Mr Lee and I happened to preach from same text. He in morning, I in afternoon.

1872, January 22, Monday

Called on Mr Daniel and Mr Pottinger, tutors of Worcester College, to tell them that my work with U.K.S. would not allow me to read for honours in the History School.

1872, January 23, Tuesday

Attended Ruridecanal Chapter at Cuddesdon Theological College. Took tea at Wheatley with Rev Mr Ellow, the Rector. Borrowed the Deanery magic lantern.

1872, January 24, Wednesday

Walked to Sandford with Mr Lee. Examined schoolchildren for prizes. Mr Lee and I dined at the King’s Arms Hotel, Sandford. There was a Magic Lantern Exhibition in the schoolroom this evening by a travelling exhibitor. Mr Lee and I walked home together.

1872, February 1, Thursday

I gave a Magic Lantern entertainment in the schoolroom at Sandford this evening. Took Bell, Rosa and Harry there in a fly.

1872, February 7, Wednesday

Drove myself to Sandford in a hired pony trap. Rosa entered Miss Hooper’s Ladies’ School. £5.5s per term, for French, music and singing.

1872, February 12, Monday

Cab to Iffley. Dined with Dr Warburton, the Rector, and exhibited magic lantern in the schoolroom afterwards.

1872, February 13, Tuesday

Pony trap to Sandford. Dined with Edward Bairvaird Hewett, of St John’s College.

Stevens may have misheard the name of his dining companion, probably Edward Balvaird Hewett, who gained his BA at St. John’s College, Oxford in 1874.
