Bell confined prematurely of a boy 8.30 am. Six months only. I baptized the infant “William”.

Received note from Provost of Worcester conveying permission to enter the college subject to satisfactory reference to Rev G W Kitchin. I therefore wrote to the latter.

Poor little William died in Rosa’s lap about 4.30 this afternoon.

I went to an entertainment at Sandford this evening given by some members of New College Choir of which Mr Lee is Precentor.

Received note from Longmans and Co to the effect that they had paid to my account London & County Bank, Oxford, £333.6.5 to my account, balance of my share of profits of Grade Lesson Books (I drew on them for £50 in October) making £383.6.5 for year ending June 30th last. As mine is only ¼ share of profits (Longmans having ½ and Hole ¼) this represents a total net profit for the year of £1533.5.8.

Buried little Willie in the Walton Street Cemetery. Grave next to right of a large flat raised stone to memory of Isabella Rebecca Kidd.

Walton Street Cemetery is now known as St Sepulchre’s Cemetery.

Called on Provost of Worcester who said Mr Kitchin had told him that if I were to read for the Law and History School (or Modern History) I should most likely get a “First”.

Mrs Young, wife of my friend Rev John Young, late fellow of Durham and now undergraduate of Balliol and residing at 5 New Inn Hall Street, died yesterday of consumption.

Lent J G Overend by cheque £10.

Attended Mrs Young’s funeral at Osney Cemetery.

Paid G. Owen Surgeon for attending Bell and vaccinating Harry and Rosa £4.4.0.

Misses Wright and Skeete spent evening with us.

Paid Mr Daniel, Bursar of Worcester College, Caution £20, Entrance fee etc £8, total £28.

Walked to my duties at Sandford. Prince of Wales dangerously ill of typhoid fever at Sandringham. Dined with Mr Lee at New College this evening.

Called on Mr Pottinger, tutor of Worcester College, about the Modern History School.

Service at Sandford this evening.

Sick visiting at Sandford. Rev John Young accompanied me.

Took cab to Sandford. Walking makes me very hot and I take cold in the church.

Bell, Rosa and Harry went to London to spend Christmas with the Mountains.

Went to London by 8.30pm train. Joined Bell etc at the Mountains’.

Christmas Day. Attended services at St John’s East Dulwich with the Mountains and my own family.

Rain. Mountain and I called on Charles Eve. Miss Carr (Mountain’s cousin) and Mr Lewin, her “young man” came to dinner.

Read prayers, morning and evening, at St John’s East Dulwich for Mr Elliot the Vicar. Took children etc to Drury Lane pantomime this afternoon. Supped with Mr Elliot and his choir.

Took children to Crystal Palace pantomime.

Went to Stockwell and breakfasted with J. Brown. Returned to Oxford.
