Went to London and stayed with Mr Thomas Brown, Bushey Villa, Burton Road, Stockwell. Called on Mr Estall this evening.
Took Harry to Mr Mountain’s this afternoon.
Returned home and brought Harry.
Viva Voce for Literae humaniores. Professor Rogers complimented me on my papers all round. All my exams for Degree are now passed 2 years 9 months since matriculation. The only tutor or lecturer I have had in any of the subjects has been Mr Sargent of Magdalene whose class for Latin Prose I attended for 2 or 3 terms at £1.1 per term of about 2 hours a week.
Called at Delegacy and notified intention to take BA on Thursday next.
Wingate dined and took tea with us. Took Bell, Rosa and Harry to “Show Sunday” in the Broad Walk this evening.
Took Bell, Rosa and Harry to see procession of boats on the river.
Tea at Mr Gibson’s.
Commemoration. Pearson and Jackson came to tea.
Took my BA. Fee for BA £7.10.0. Featherstone came to tea.
Called on Rev. Lancelot I. Lee, Bursar of New College and Vicar of Sandford on Thames respecting curacy on recommendation of Rev. G. W. Kitchin, Censor of Christ Church and ??”Nonascripts”??.
Featherstone came to tea and supper.
Rosa went on visit to Mrs Harris at Northfleet. Wrote to Canon Gordon of Elsfield respecting curacy of Marston.
Received note from Canon Gordon that curacy of Marston was not vacant.
Went to London, to Mr Hole’s to work on Useful Knowledge Series.
Harry went to Marlborough on a visit to Mr and Mrs Featherstone.
Hole and I called on Longmans’ about U.K.S. Returned to Oxford by 6.20 pm train.
Mr and Mrs Featherstone came to tea. Harry had returned from Marlboro in a hurry owing to outbreak of fever at the school.
Bell went to Cheltenham. I took tea with Mr and Mrs Featherstone.
Called on Rev L. J. Lee, New College. He gave me nominations of assistant curacy of Sandford on Thames which I accepted at the nominal stipend of £30 per annum. The “living” is worth £90 without a house. “Father Faber” the Hymn writer was one of my predecessors. The stipend will barely pay for my driving over to the services.
Wrote to Bishop of Oxford (Mackarness) forwarding my nomination to curacy of Sandford on Thames. I walked to Sandford this evening. Time in going 1 hour 8 minutes.
Miss Wait, Mrs Prowse and Rosa came from Northfleet.
Miss (blank), Mrs Prowse went on to Bristol. Bell returned from Cheltenham. I wrote to the Bishop of Oxford.
Received letter from Bishop of Oxford saying he had added my name to his list for the September Ordination.
Went on river this afternoon to row with Mr. Hoggins.
