Sibford Community Reading Group welcomes new people

The group has been going over 2 years now and was formed by keen readers in the community and happily given a base at the Quaker school. The fact that we meet in the comfortable yet neutral surroundings of the newly refurbished school library means for most of the members that we can come in and discuss the books for an hour and not worry about tidying or catering as would happen in a private group conducted in peoples homes.

Examples of books that we have discussed include The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Engleby, Year of Wonders, and all the titles are selected by members of the group on a rota system, once a month. Up to now, these have tended to be relatively recently published works mixed with classics. We often work with Oxford Libraries book list who loan books on their Book Groups list. The appeal of many of the books is that they are sometimes out of our “comfort zone” and not what we would normally select but often these choices are the most exciting.

The group meets the last Wednesday of the month during term times – so about 9 times a year. We meet at 6.30 — 7.30 pm (which seems to be more favourable in winter) and make a small donation each session to give to a charity of our choice.

The next book titles up for discussion are

Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townend Warner and By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept by Elizabeth Smart.

Why not come along and give it a try, you can come to any number of sessions in a year or go on our contact list and wait till your favourite books come up.

Jubilee Commemorative Mugs

As for previous village Jubilee celebrations, with support from our Parish Councils and the Town Estates charity, we are planning to present commemorative mugs to all school age (below 6th form) and pre-school children living in the parishes of Sibford Ferris, Sibford Gower and Burdrop. In order to achieve this we need to gather a complete list of eligible children to ensure that we have enough mugs on order.

To this end we ask all parents to contact Helen or Adrian Lamb.

The mugs will be presented after the Family Sports Day on Monday 4th June. If you cannot collect them on the day, we will make arrangements to get them to you.
