Sibfords History Society – The Discovery, Recognition and Installation of the 14th Dalai Lama

Roger Croston is an independent part-time scholar. Since 1996 he has interviewed as many Westerners as he could trace who witnessed the old Tibet, to record their memories and to research their collections of diaries, photographs and films. Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, was born as Phamo Dhondup  on July 6th, 1935. He was identified as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama , and brought to Lhasa, Tibet’s capital city. Roger tells the story of how this came about,  and  he will consider how the now 90-year-old’s successor can be chosen.
