Gower Parish Council Notes - "Village safety"

Intense concerns for village safety was expressed by all councillors at their last meeting. The volume of traffic in and through the village continues to increase alarmingly. As villagers, we have a special responsibility and local knowledge of hazard areas – dangerous bends, narrow lanes, awkward crossroads and junctions, car and coach parking and especially the school, should be used to ADVANTAGE. Please may we ask everyone to think carefully about their responsibilities to themselves and towards others whether walking or driving in the village.

Sibford Youth Club

The Youth Club is rapidly gaining a reputation for being very active in view of the number of competitions entered and activities arranged. It has also had some notable successes. We were the best placed club in the County table tennis and badminton competitions, our girls 5-a-side team won their District league with the two boys teams coming 3rd and 4th respectively and one of our teams came second out of 26 teams in the District pop quiz.

We have also entered a Road Safety quiz and a County “Superteam” competition. The ten-pin bowling trip to Coventry recently prove popular but it was with regret that we had to cancel our Valentines Dance in view of other local competition.

On club nights recently we have had demonstrations in weight training and self defence which proved popular. This month we shall have a speaker on canoeing.

On Monday 10th March there will be an open evening for girls of secondary school age. It is hoped to be able to show a topical video and to have activities relevant to the group. Therefore, we trust it will be well supported. (The boys will visit Wolvercote Boys’ Club on that evening).

The jumble sale held on Saturday 22nd February and organised by David Baker was well attended and raised £143 for youth club funds.

Should you wish any further details of the club and its activities, please contact us.
