Between the end of the parliamentary session and various visits to local people in the constituency, it has been a busy month.

Here is a look back at what I have been up to:

Working for you in Westminster

Parliament was prorogued on 29 April, bringing the parliamentary session to an end. I very much look forward to the next session, which is scheduled to begin with the King’s Speech on 13 May, during which I will continue to work to deliver the change people in Banbury and North Oxfordshire voted for.

I am proud of our achievements this session which include passing legislation to improve renters’ rights and employment rights; ending the two-child benefit cap to lift children out of poverty; investing in social housing, the NHS and defence; increasing the minimum wage; and taking back control of public transport.

Alongside voting on important legislation, as a member of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee, I participated in inquiries into modernising elections and housing conditions in England, on which we recently published a report.

As Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Multiple Sclerosis, I was proud to support MS Awareness Week (20–26 April), a time to challenge people’s misconceptions about this unpredictable and varied condition. MS is an issue close to my heart, and I sympathise enormously with those in Banbury and North Oxfordshire affected by it.

This month also saw the celebration of St George’s Day, an important reminder that being English is foremost about our shared values and that it is up to us whether we make our national flag a symbol of unity or division. Another day for celebrating what brings us together was National Pet Day, which I enjoyed with my three cats – Midnight, Luna and Bella.

Across the Constituency

I spent a lot of time in the constituency supporting our fantastic local Labour candidates for Cherwell District Council, as well as visiting local businesses and charities, attending events and talking to local residents, such as at a surgery I held in Chipping Norton.

I visited brilliant local businesses like Wine Vaults in Banbury and Plastic Parts Direct, as well as speaking to various local business leaders at the Banbury Chamber of Commerce. I also attended Banbury Parkinson’s Coffee Morning, where I chatted with attendees about what support is on offer for people in the area living with the condition; met the brilliant Emma Radley, CEO of Katharine House Hospice, to talk about the charities vital work; visited Banbury Larder, who provide sustainable food, life skills, lunch clubs, wellbeing support and employability support to those in the community; and visited Morrisons Banbury to hear about their free breakfast initiative in partnership with Kellogg’s.

Thank you to all the constituents, groups and businesses who have engaged with me over the past month. As always, I am contactable at sean.woodcock.mp@parliament.uk
