(July 1982) What a Day!

Well might we say that about each day of the open weekend. The Concert and supper were much enjoyed and finished with everyone singing heartily along with the accordion in soaring spirits.

Just as well! Saturday‘s rain was, no doubt, the heaviest on a Saturday in June since the opening of the Village Hall, but all the events went ahead with miraculous dry spells for the judging of the mice and the crowning of Miss Sibford, whose delightful appearance and personality would have shone through anything; and then as the afternoon wore on and the rain gave way to a lovely evening, the village was full of strollers again, all determined to enjoy themselves and all that was on offer.

Everyone deserves special thanks for what they did: the organisers, some of whom had worked night and day for weeks with the kind of attention to detail that makes things go smoothly on the day; those who opened their homes and gardens, gave or lent their treasures, staged events, or faithfully turned up to do the least glamorous jobs; and everyone who visited the various attractions with such obvious appreciation. The only pity, beside the weather, was that there was too little time to see everything.

Sunday’s sun provided a chance to wind down in pleasant enjoyment, with the sporting laurels going to the Ferris, who won the rounders and tennis, and the Gower an honourable runner-up, victors at cricket.
